Many of us (or at least some of us) would agree that life can be a tricky journey. It’s far from a straight, easily figured-out path. Some people believe life is about discovering yourself– learning who you are, what you’re good at, and what makes you happy. Others, especially followers of new-age thinking, argue life is about creating yourself– shaping your reality with your actions, choices, and mindset. And of course, there are many other perspectives. As they say, as many people exist, as many opinions there are.
Well, let’s look at both of them.
The Journey of Self-Discovery
From the moment we’re born, we’re on a path of learning, that is getting to know the world, the people around us, and ourselves. We stumble, fail, succeed, make mistakes, and try again. Every mistake carries a lesson. Every success gives insight.
Learning, at its core, is discovering something new, whether about the world or about yourself. Attending school, college, or work, trying new experiences, meeting different people – all of these contribute to understanding who you are and what you’re capable of. Slowly, you start to notice patterns: what energizes you, what drains you, what you excel at, and what feels natural.
At some point, many of us have a realization: “I’m actually good at this, and I enjoy it.”The challenge is that we often ignore these revelations. We find excuses: I’m already busy, it won’t pay off, it’s too late, it’s too hard, or maybe I’m just lazy. Life provides endless reasons to suppress what we’ve discovered about ourselves.
But those who take the leap, who follow what they love and are good at, often say that’s when they finally find themselves. The lesson is simple but profound: noticing your potential is one thing; acting on it is another.
The Process of Self-Creation
On the other side, self-creation is about the idea that we shape our reality (consciously or unconsciously) through our thoughts, actions, and perceptions. Ever heard “what you think about, comes about”? There’s truth to it.
If you’re negative, complaining, or stuck in a cycle of self-pity, life often reflects that. Problems seem endless, opportunities scarce, and circumstances challenging. It’s like a snowball effect – one negative situation leads to another.
But if you focus on positivity, nurture goals, take action, and keep an open heart, you start to notice opportunities aligning. You meet people who help, find solutions that appear just in time, and see doors you never expected. While not everything is under your control, your mindset, choices, and persistence can create a reality that feels aligned with your desires.
In essence, self-creation is about responsibility. Life as you see it today is largely the result of your choices – even when it feels like others are in control. If someone else seems to dictate your path, it’s often because you allowed it. Realizing this is empowering: you are the creator of your story.
Is it that Discovery and Creation are Two Sides of the Same Coin?
Whether you lean toward self-discovery or self-creation, the key truth is the same: you are in charge of your life.
If discovering yourself, explore what excites you. Find your strengths, follow your passions, and embrace those revelations – even if life makes excuses seem easier.
If creating yourself, cultivate positivity, define your goals, and take consistent action. Your thoughts and attitude shape what you notice and what opportunities come your way.
In both cases, perception is powerful. What you pay attention to grows. What you nurture in your mind, energy, and actions begins to show up in your reality. You create the presence of things in your life simply by how you perceive, react, and engage with the world.
So, Next time you feel stuck or unsure, ask yourself: am I waiting to discover who I am, or am I actively creating who I want to be? The truth is, most of us do a bit of both: discovering and creating simultaneously. And that’s okay. The important part is awareness and choice. Life doesn’t just happen to you; you learn, grow, and create along the way.
