Follow Your Heart Before It’s Too Late

Is there anything that truly inspires you? Something that makes you smile just thinking about it and fills you with motivation? And then, almost instantly, you find yourself thinking: “I wish I could do it now…” or “I wish I had the chance…”

Those “I wish” thoughts rarely help. More often than not, they lead straight to self-pity. Many of us fall into this trap without even noticing, especially when we’re surrounded by people who stick to a “normal life”: work hard, fit in, follow the rules, and suppress anything that makes you stand out.

Here’s what I believe: we are all born to realize our fullest potential. As kids, we dream freely. We believe, imagine, and act as if anything is possible. But then, well-meaning parents, relatives, or even friends tell us, “Enough dreaming. Be practical. Do something meaningful.”

And just like that, we stop dreaming. We stop believing. We settle into a version of life that feels “safe,” but slowly dims our passions. Sometimes, we even get scared to dream at all. That fear becomes a quiet, relentless voice in our heads whispering, “Ah, it’s impossible. Don’t waste your time.”

And what happens to that potential we were born to fulfill? Do we live, or do we just exist until we’re old, wise, and full of regret? Wise, because finally we see the painful truth: we wasted our most precious resource – time.

I’ve always wanted to feel free in everything I do. And I realized the only way to truly feel free is to follow your heart. By “heart,” I mean your intuition, your gut feeling, that inner voice that makes you feel calm, aligned, and alive. Every dream, every inspired idea we have comes from there. The secret is simple: act on them. Decide firmly that you will. As Richard Branson says: “Screw it, just do it.”

Here’s one example from my own life. I’d always dreamed of traveling solo – to far-off, wild places like New Zealand, Brazil, Argentina, and even Alaska. Naturally, years ago when I shared this dream, I was met with discouragement: “It’s too expensive,” “It’s dangerous, especially for a girl traveling alone,” “It’s a waste of time and money,” “What about your career?” You get the idea.

But this is what ignited the spark within me, a sense that if I waited too long, it might never happen, or that the opportunity I had might not present itself again. Sure, I could have simply followed what others said, done what was expected, lived the “safe” life that wouldn’t make anyone question their own choices. But then I asked myself: What next? If I’m not happy following the path others laid out, if I just fit in or do what they do, will those same people make me happy? After all, they were the ones who discouraged me from pursuing what I truly wanted.

Once you follow what truly calls you – follow your bliss, as Joseph Campbell famously said – it not only eliminates the constant “what if” thoughts or future regrets, e.g. what if I had really done what I wanted, or I wish I had taken that chance, but it also naturally leads you to the next thing that feels right. One step opens the door to another, gradually setting you on a course of life that allows you to feel fulfilled, aligned, and fully capable of doing what you came into this world to do in the first place.

Here’s the truth: I am responsible for my own life. And I decided to take charge of making it a happy ride. Freedom and happiness, to me, mean following your inspiration, doing what feels right, and trusting yourself. Sure, there are tough moments, even when you’re doing what you love, but they make the joyful moments even brighter. The key is being on a path you’ve chosen, and being happy walking it, step by step.

So back in 2016, I saved what I could, ignored endless planning, and set off solo on a year-long journey around South and North America. I figured it out as I went. And honestly? That freedom, that spontaneity, made the trip not only incredible and unforgettable. I won’t say it was perfect, it came with its own lessons, but it also naturally gave me the confidence to see the next step I needed to take. Had I not gone on this journey and continued with the comfortable routines I was stuck in, it would have felt far too safe to change. Following my heart showed me not just where to go, but how to trust myself along the way.

If you’re reading this, my hope is simple: feel inspired, take steps toward what lights you up, and don’t waste another moment. Life is short. Live it fully. Be happy. Follow your heart.
